I live in SF, and this is a very typical room – small, white, with rehabbed wooden floors. It’s one of the reasons MCM works so well in so many places in my burg. Big, overstuffed upholstery just doesn’t do well in the typical apartment here – they overpower rooms and choke your space to death. Here’s a fine example of MCM at work.

Do you know what I love more? My children. And that is why I will never live in my MCM dream home. Because mid-century modern architecture is designed to KILL YOUR CHILDREN. (Also, moderately clumsy or drunk adults).

The shelter rags of the time were aimed more at those who couldn’t afford the “real deal” of genuine Eames, Saarinen, Nelson, and Noguchi pieces, and yet wanted to present the same sort of stripped down “look and feel” that was regarded as the essence of Mid Century Modern style.

This pic from BH$G, one of the preeminent shelter books of the period, offers a good example of that approach.
